About Us

Welcome,

Come visit soon for an exhibition, or quiet time in a favourite gallery. This is an exciting year that you won't want to miss! View & click on the slide show above to gain more information about each image.

The Gore Bay Museum building is part of the Gore Bay court complex and served as the Manitoulin District Jail and jailer's residence until 1945. It is one of the few remaining Ontario jails which has retained many of its original features. It has now been converted into a museum that displays the history of local early settlers.

The museum is devoted to self-guiding, self-explanatory thematic exhibits such as The Dentist Office & The General Store, that bring the times to life. The Kitchen has labour saving devices and everyday objects. All successful museums have some parts that are pure bliss, requiring absolutely no effort. It is possible to "gaze" at the cases admiring the hats, clothing, and shoes. Their significance, in their symbolism, is foremost here.

In 2014,The Gore Bay Museum was recognized with the Ontario Historical Society's 2014 Russell K. Cooper Living History Site, or Heritage-Based Museum Award, for its hard work and dedication to the preservation of Ontario's history.

In 2012 a branch of The Gore Bay Museum was established called The Harbour Centre. Located at 40 Water Street, it sits by the Bay and is a cultural hub.

There are countless ways to experience The Gore Bay Museum collection and this year's exhibitions. Start your visit anywhere, in the galleries, at The Harbour Centre, or at one of the many events and be inspired, moved, or just very glad you came!
